Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly wager against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
