Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi-low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering choices and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, as well as many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
