Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
